Double Glazing

A good product but beware of the hard sell.

I am not giving any names in this article, as we are in the process of having some double glazing measured up and fitted. I am very happy with the individual salesman who called and I shook hands with him and promised when we have some money coming from an investment at the end of January, we will buy his products at the prices he has given me a written estimate for.

I have used a few double glazing companies in the past and if I had thought about it, I would have contacted the local company who fitted us new doors and 2 new windows at a good price and with no attempt to hard sell. However, it was a nasty wet day and I answered the door to a nice young man who asked if he could quote for any windows. Knowing that the front windows were cloudy in places due to them being very early examples of double glazing, I said he could quote for them. I expected him to measure up there and then but instead he asked for my phone number which I gave him and less than an hour later, I had a phone call from the nearest office of the well known company asking if a salesman could call.

I agreed but remembered well the salesman who had called on us many years ago from a now defunct company and who had spun his spiel out for four hours, no doubt making us feel obliged to him and feeling that we had to give him an order. I was not going to accept that again and so when the salesman called, I laid my intentions on the line and told him I wanted his best quote, without phone calls to his manager otherwise the deal was off. He was a decent guy, measured up quickly and spent 45 minutes over that and explaining the difference between the different qualities of window. He then gave a quote of a bit less than we thought it might be.

I then told him about our near off payment of money and he did try to sell us credit, but I managed to put him off until our money came through within 3 months. We talked for a while and he was nice, but he explained if we had got another of the salesmen, he would have stayed around until we signed. I explained to him that the other salesman would have been thrown out of our house before very long and he would certainly not have got an order from me. 35 years of being in business has made me nobodies fool, I have seen them all and only the decent Salesmen ever got orders. At least that was the case after I had learned after being ripped off a few times.

Anyway, the salesman was very knowledgeable about the latest regulations and pointed out one thing that had always worried me, that the bedroom windows have no openings big enough for us to get through if there was ever a fire. So when the new windows are fitted in February, we will be able to sleep at night knowing they will be escapable as that is the regulation now.

He had great products and we are also happy that the windows will be as secure as windows can be from prospective burglars and also as sound proof as windows can be. Being early risers and early to bed at night, we have often been disturbed by the boy racer fraternity, but as I said earlier the windows we have at the moment are very old.
